Both Inlays and Onlays grasp the cusps or edges of your tooth, but an inlay is attached to the center of the tooth while an onlay is attached to the cusps. An inlay or onlay may be needed when one of your back teeth decays partially because they restore the tooth, allowing the dentist to conserve more of the original tooth structure. Either of these restorations could be chosen instead of a filling if a filling does not have enough surface.

What should I expect?
An inlay and onlay will take two appointments. During the first appointment, the doctor will take a mold of your tooth with a dental tray. This mold will be sent to a dental laboratory to be formed. Then the doctor may choose to put a temporary cover on the tooth until the following appointment, depending on your situation. This will be discussed with you prior to any action being taken.
The dental office will contact you when the inlay or onlay has arrived at the office. Whether you are receiving an inlay or an onlay, at the second appointment the doctor will cement the new structure to your tooth and achieve a uniform appearance and restrengthen the tooth.
